Habits are the invisible architecture of everyday life. It takes work to make a habit, but once that habit is set, we can harness the energy of habits to build happier, stronger, more productive lives.
Out Willpower Is Limited, Yet We Rely On It Every Day To Get Our Tasks Done
Even if we build willpower slowly over time, it’s never enough to reach all of our goals.
The solution lies in habit creation, the method by which we transform hard tasks into easy ones, making them automatic and independent of our will power.
Each of us has millions of habits, in how we do our work, interact with others, perceive the world, and think about ourselves.
Left un-examined, these habits are just as likely to hinder our progress as they are to push it along.
Without A Deliberate System For Building Habits, We Become Our Own Worst Enemy
Achievement can be learned. It’s a muscle, and once you learn how to flex it, you’ll be able to meet life’s challenges and fulfill your goals.
We can use our habit-muscle to gain confidence to do what we’ve always wanted and overcome obstacles that hamper us from reaching our potential, by changing our rituals, habits and thought patterns including:
- Don’t try—DO;
- Excuses are self-defeating
- Believe you are a doer and achiever and you’ll become one
- Build resiliency by reinforcing what you do rather than what you accomplish
- Learn to ignore distractions that prevent you from achieving your goals
- Become open to learning from your own experience and from those around you
The brain is complex and is always working with our egos to sabotage our best intentions. But we can be mindful; we can create habits that make our lives better.
Caveat Emptor: These mindsets are the key difference between physical, social, mental and spiritual GIANTS in life and the cowardly lurkers around the edges of the room. Once you start scrolling, you won’t be able to “un-read” them, and the vast majority of your pathetic excuses and rationalizations for your own lack of guts and self discipline will be rendered meaningless. Then, if you don’t begin taking real action and making a consistent sustained effort to become who you really want to be and live the life you SECRETLY want – You’ll know . . . Any missed opportunities, regrets and every single moment of stagnation is ON YOU.
The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny – it is the light that guides your way
The purpose of today’s training is to defeat yesterday’s understanding
You’ve got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit
War is a respite from training
Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill
In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few
As a single footstep will not make a path on the Earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives
Henry David Thoreau
Singlemindedness is all-powerful
Tsunetomo Yamamoto, The Hagakure
Even if it seems certain that you will lose, retaliate. Neither wisdom nor technique has a place in this. A real man does not think of victory or defeat. He plunges recklessly towards an irrational death. By doing this, you will awaken from your dreams
Tsunetomo Yamamoto, The Hagakure
No matter if the enemy has thousands of men, there is fulfillment in simply standing them off and being determined to cut them all down, starting from one end. You will finish the greater part of it.
Tsunetomo Yamamoto, The Hagakure
I have brought myself, by long meditation, to the conviction that a human being with a settled purpose must accomplish it, and that nothing can resist a will that will stake even existence for its fulfillment
Fix your mind upon its object. Hold to this, unswerving. Disowning fear and hope. Advance only upon this goal
Krishna to Arjuna before Battle in the Bhagavad Gita
Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success. That is the way great spiritual giants are produced
Men of true worth take pleasure in realizing their ambitions. The common man takes pleasure in doing the bestfor his affiars.
Our plans miscarry because they have no aim. When a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind
A man’s worth is no greater than the worth of his ambitions
Waste no more time talking about great souls and how they should be. Become one yourself!
First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do
The primary thing when you take a sword in your hands is your intention to cut the enemy, whatever the means. Whenever you parry, hit, spring, strike or touch the enemy’s cutting sword, you must cut the enemy in the same movement. It is essential to attain this. If you think only of hitting, springing, striking or touching the enemy, you will not be able actually to cut him
However many holy words you read, however many you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act upon them?
Oh By The Way, Just One More Thing. . .
Getting inspired by some epic quotes about simplifying your life, single-mindedness and taking massive action to achieve your goals is all well and good. Everybody likes a good meme these days.
But – my goal here at EarthWaterFireAir.com isn’t just to “inspire” or “motivate” you. It’s definitely not to make you FEEL AS IF you’re doing something important and great for your life by reading quotes.
I try, and over the course of the next year will continue working to improve the quality of material I present to help you ACTUALLY improve yourself and your life.
No soccer-mom whispering. No chakra stones or energy. Just objective, quantifiable, replicable steps to increase your physical, social, mental and post-personal power – in that order.
So, when coming up on the new year, I wanted to avoid the cliche’ inspirational stuff (although not altogether), and focus on delivering something that will actually FORCE your to clarify, simplify and execute.
What difference could 2 months of focused productivity and efficiency make for your 2017?
Or more importantly – Imagine how much progress you’re going to make towards achieving your BIG goals and becoming your highest and best self if you DON’T start building some hardcore habit muscles and executing on the REAL high leverage activities in your life. . .
The question you really have to ask yourself is do you want your 2017 to be a year of inspiration rubber-necking, or – are you finally ready to WIN HARD and build the life you really want and deserve?
I’ll leave it to you, memespreader.
