Question by PW: I love Sun Yan Zi, but don’t know Mandarin. Can somebody give translations of her songs?
If you try translating with a dictionary–and I think I have a good one–the Rick Harbaugh Genealogical Dictionary from Zhongwen.com–you get things like “by reality push push/ dream of can change form/ persist offer person/ feel delicious strength” (first lines of the song ‘yan shen’). I have a really good Mandarin grammar book, too, and it still doesn’t help.

I’ve been loking at University courses, and am especially interested in the more ancient side of history, greeks, romans, egyptians. Anyone know which would be best to go for?

Question by : What is the traditional Japanese calligraphy for the seven individual virtues of Bushido?
I understand the seven virtues, but I simply cannot find consistently accurate calligraphy for something along the lines of “The Seven Virtues of Bushido” and the individual virtues. It would be greatly appreciated to include some details regarding the virtues just for supplementary notes. Thanks

Question by don’tbeajerk. :]: Who did Confucius intend to be the audience of his teachings?
I am writing a paper on The Analects, and I can’t figure out who Confucius wrote it for (or, at least, his teachings.) Was it for the general population of the Zhou dynasty, or just for political leaders?

I would argue that it was for the general population of educated readers, because in the Analects, there is a lot there about how the lower classes should obey their superiors. If it was just for the superiors, then why would that be in there? Though that’s a little flip, because while the educated would be the only ones to READ it, the teachings would trickle down and influence EVERYBODY.
